The Way It's Used

There are many different ways that eLearning can be used to benefit both the learner and the training division. This is not meant to be a complete list of ways to incorporate eLearning into your training methodology, instead it is a list of ways that we are using or considering.
How are you using it? Send me an email and let me know, I'll add your method to the list.

Online Training- This is a very common way to use eLearning. It is a stand-alone course that is delivered over the Internet, Intranet or CD, and is used independent of any other training. It is sometimes used to address a particular training need that is not currently met by any other type of training.

Blended Learning- This type of training combines elements of online and instructor-led training.

Prework- This is one example of Blended Learning. This method requires a student to complete online training, prior to attending, or in some cases registering, for instructor-led training. Prework can be used to ensure that all students start the instructor-led portion with a basic level of knowledge. For example, for our Economic Services Basic training, students must take several prework courses, one of which is designed to teach students how to access the software, sign on and sign off. This seems trivial, but before this course was introduced as Prework, this task took 20-30 minutes of classroom time.

Postwork- This is one example of Blended Learning. This method can be used to assign homework to students as a refresher to reemphasize important points or topics. Since classroom time is very limited, this method can also be used to go more in-depth with topics and to offer more advanced scenarios. When applicable, credit for the course can be withheld until all postwork is completed.

Review- eLearning can be developed to offer interactive exercises during class, as a means to review topics and introduce context to facts.

Consistency of message- If there is a policy, procedure or statute change and you need to get a lot of people trained in a little time, one method to consider is using video. Video taping the subject-matter-expert and distributing that video via the Internet, Intranet, CD or DVD ensures that everyone gets the same message. We had the opportunity to use this method, except we showed the video in a classroom and the Instructor acted as a facilitator, pausing the video, answering questions, etc.
